Moving homes is going to make you feel like you're trying to take a sip from a fire hose. There's no way around the amount of work it takes, but there are some things you can do to make it a little more tolerable. Here's your go-to plan for getting into that new place!

Preparation before you can move

Take some time off work

Getting work off may be hard because you are not always able to know the window you'll close on a home and be able to move in. A lot of employers will allow you to take personal time off or an emergency vacation. Make sure to talk about this beforehand, work overtime preemptively to keep ahead on all the tasks you can, and even consider taking half days if you absolutely need to go in every day.

Pack before you need to

Moving can sneak up on your or come quicker than you think with an unexpectedly fast closing. You can pack almost all of your belongings and keep out only the essentials. You'll be living minimally for a time, but it will make your upcoming move infinitely easier.

Don't move what you don't want

Moving is a great time to hit the reset button on your possessions. You'll get into possessions you haven't seen in years, walk down memory lane, and also find a bunch of things you no longer need. Have a garage sale or if you want to avoid the hassle of pricing and working the sale, consider donating the things you don't need. These items are space in a moving truck you don't need, boxes you don't need to unpack, and room in your new house you can free up. Goodwill will often come to pick up larger items. Other organizations will schedule a pick-up for your donation and email you a tax deduction document.

When you can move


Mobilize the masses! Many of your friends will volunteer to help you move, but they're probably not going to be organized about it. That's up to you. Consider having a "moving party" on the weekend when people are available. Get a headcount for food and drinks which will help people commit. This will give you a better idea on how to organize the day and utilize the help.

Talk with your real estate agent

You'll likely be showing your home during the move which can throw some kinks in. You might be boxing up everything and get a call from your real estate agent saying the house needs to be ready to show in two hours. You'll need to scramble to get the boxes you have out, clean up everything, and get the moving truck out of the driveway. Consider talking with your agent to come up with a time to move when the house will likely not be shown. You can also opt for a night move when you do a lot of the bigger shifts of packing and hauling out boxes in the late evening.

Hire the Pros

When you are moving from one house to another in the same city or think you don't have many possessions it can be easy to think you'll just rent a Uhaul and make the move. The problem is this will take a ton of working hours, a lot of money in packing materials, and you won't do as good of a job as someone more experienced. Consider doing some research and finding a mover with great reviews. They'll have their truck, a system for packing/unpacking, and will keep everything organized. You'll be able to monitor or just delegate what needs to be done and not have to worry about the heavy lifting. Plus, it can all be done in one day rather than multiple trips back and forth between your two homes.
